General Information

The second most popular is the Machame Route, also called the Whiskey Route. This route is 7 days with longer hiking distances than the Marangu Route. There are no sleeping huts, so climbers sleep in tents. This route is more beautiful, and a higher percentage of climbers reach the summit.

 

Day 01:  Arrival at Moshi

Pick up upon arrival and transfer to AMEG Lodge Kilimanjaro for dinner and overnight stay

 

Day 02: Moshi – Machame camp

After breakfast transfer from the Lodge to Kilimanjaro National Park Gate at Machame.From here you trek through the lush forest to Machame Hut (3,000 m). Stay overnight at Machame Camp

 

Day 03: Machame camp – Shira Camp

Leaving the forest, the path follows a steep ridge passing through heather and open moorlands and crossing a large gorge to reach Shira Hut (3,800m).

Day 04: Shira Camp – Barranco Camp

You turn eastwards and continue ascending through the dry landscape before dropping again to reach Barranco (3,900 m).

Day 05:  Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Day to acclimatize. Stay overnight at Karanga Valley (3950m)

 

Day 06: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

The path climbs steeply out of Barranco Valley, crosses the Karanga Valley and turns north to reach Barafu Hut (4,600 m)

Day 07: Barafu Camp – Mweka Camp

A long day and an early start to reach the crater rim at Stella Point in time for sunrise. Then continue on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Descend to Barafu and down on to Mweka (3,000m)

Day 08: Mweka – Moshi

Descend to the park gate. You are transferred back to AMEG Lodge Kilimanjaro for your dinner and
overnight stay

 

Day 09: Moshi – Depart

After brekfast trenasfer to the airport to catch your flight back home.

 

Climbing Gear ;

Footwear
•    Be sure to break in your shoes before the hike
•    Take trekking shoes for hiking during the day, preferably warm (leather), waterproof, and with ankle-  support
•    Take tennis shoes or sandals for lounging in the evening
•    Gaitors
•    Hiking socks
•    Wool socks

Clothing

Your inner layer should be warm therefore preferably no cotton. Next layer should be insulating and warm, and the top layer should be water proof but breathable. Kilimanjaro may be on the equator, but the temperature can drop drastically.
We recommend that you wear shorts for first and last and pants for hiking and for lounging in the evenings

•    Fleece jacket or wool sweater

•    Down jacket
•    Rain jacket, needed for rainforest and snow

Cold Weather
•    Warm mittens and/or gloves (waterproof)

•    Balaclava or neck gaitor
•    Crampons (may be needed March-May and November-December)

Baggage

•    Day pack, for you to carry
•    Large waterproof duffel bag or backpack, for porters to carry
•    Plastic bags

Sleeping

•    Sleeping bag (-10 degrees F is recommended)
•    Sleeping pad and repair kit
•    Mattress (to put under the sleeping bag when camping)
•    Tents are supplied by AMEG Safaris at no charge

Other

•    Water bottles (2+)
•    Get 3 liters of bottled water before the trip. Guides will boil water for you along the route. Some people still bring a water filter to enhance the taste. You may want an insulated water bottle to keep it from freezing on the last day. Please note plastic bottles will not be allowed on the mountain – Protect your environment
